Anesthesia Options

Comfort matters

We not only want you to achieve a healthier, happier smile, but we want you to have a positive experience throughout your treatment. Your comfort is the highest priority at Greater Ventura Oral & Facial Surgery. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are uniquely qualified to administer anesthesia, going beyond their dentistry degree and completing a hospital-based residency where they receive top-notch training in emergency medicine, general surgery, and anesthesiology. Trusted and experienced oral surgeons like Dr. Zarrinkelk, Dr. Siavash and Dr. Coppelson are highly qualified to safely administer anesthesia to ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout your oral surgery procedure.

The type of anesthesia that will be selected for you will be discussed during your consultation appointment. Your oral surgeon will determine the anesthesia option for you based on your unique condition, level of anxiety, health history, and type of procedure to be performed.

Pre- and post-operative instructions will be provided to you by your oral surgeon in advance of your procedure. For your health and safety, please follow all guidelines and call us if you have any questions about your care before, during, or after your treatment. For your convenience, our general pre- and post-operative instructions can be viewed on our website.

Types of anesthesia

Different types of anesthesia are available and used depending on the type of procedure, patient health and anxiety, and other factors.

  • Local anesthesia

is injected directly where needed and blocks the signals for pain and discomfort at the surgical site during the procedure. Local anesthesia is commonly used with nitrous oxide.

  • Nitrous oxide

is administered as an inhaled gas and works to relieve feelings of anxiety quickly. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide calms the patient while the procedure is underway. It is commonly used during many dental procedures.

  • Intravenous (IV) sedation

is injected directly into the vein and allows the patient to enter a sleep-like state. If IV sedation is used, most patients will not remember the procedure, as post-surgical amnesia is commonly experienced.

  • General Anesthesia

is typically reserved for patients whose procedure is complex and/or extensive in nature. The patient is completely unconscious under general anesthesia.

Dr. Zarrinkelk, Dr. Siavash and Dr. Coppelson perform the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures at their practices in Ventura, Ojai and Westlake Village, CA. They are highly qualified in administering anesthesia to ensure treatment is comfortable and safe for their patients.
