Dental Implants 101

Dental implants are one of the most impactful dental health treatments we, as dentists, have available to us. They are truly changing the way people live, allowing those who had previously lost teeth to rediscover the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and enjoy life. I’m often asked about dental implants, so following is a brief “Dental Implants 101” outline:

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are essentially anchors, which act as tooth root substitutes that hold either a replacement tooth, set of teeth or bridge.

How do Dental Implants work?

They are carefully inserted below the gumline. Small posts are then attached to the implant, which provides stable anchors for your new teeth.

For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two simple office procedures. First, the implants are placed under the gumline.  For the first three to six months the implants are beneath the surface of the gums, gradually bonding with the jawbone. Second, I will uncover the implants and attach a small healing collar. I can then start making your new teeth.

The entire procedure usually takes a few months with patients experiencing little to no disruption in their daily life.

Am I a candidate?
Dental implants are an effective and long-lasting oral care solution, but not everybody is an ideal candidate for the procedure. I have developed a list of questions to ask that can help you decide if you or someone you know is a candidate for dental implants:

Do you have…

  • Good gum health?
  • Good bone density?
  • Good oral health?

There are other factors to consider as well. If you’re a heavy smoker, pregnant, or someone who suffers from chronic diseases like uncontrolled diabetes you may not be a good candidate for dental implants. That’s why it’s important to talk schedule a consultation to learn more about dental implants and if they’re an appropriate choice for you.
